Who's Who in a Fixed Indexed Annuity
A fixed indexed annuity contract involves up to four, but typically three, different parties. These are the Insurance Company, the Contract Owner and Annuitant, and the Beneficiary or Beneficiaries.
- Insurance Company: This is the company that issues the annuity. This company holds onto your money, and is responsible for backing the guarantees that an annuity comes with.
- Contract Owner: The individual who purchases an annuity and determines the beneficiaries. The contract owner and annuitant are usually the same person, but this is not always the case. This is why we say that there are three, sometimes four parties.
- Annuitant: The annuitant’s life expectancy determines when and how much they will receive in benefits. Typically, they are also the contract owner.
- Beneficiary: In the event of the annuitant’s death, the death benefit will be paid to the beneficiary or beneficiaries designated by the contract owner.
